Position: Product Engineer
BASIC FUNCTION
This position manages an assigned product family and serves as its technical focal point within the organization. The position is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining a product/product family. Ensures application data supports sales/marketing and production procedures efficiently utilizing materials and personnel. Tests finished product for quality and performance purposes and recommends changes to product specifications as necessary. The position relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
NATURE & SCOPE:
The Product Engineer is primarily a ‘Product Manager’ responsible for a product family. He/she must possess business acumen towards the global market aligned with industries (Chemical, Mining, etc.) served by the product family. He/she will collaborate with sales & marketing to understand product-market scope and growth alternatives. He/she must be aware of customer expectations as well as product strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. He/she will facilitate effective product designs that meet or exceed market expectations, and which are aligned with the objectives of the organization.
The Product Engineer will establish design standards, perform hydraulic and mechanical analysis, and consult on the design of components for manufacture. He/she is responsible for design and development engineering for new product development, product extensions or enhancement, and product cost management. He/she will lead and direct project activities from concept through design to validation and testing. Further, he/she will ensure that the technical aspects of business systems and sales/marketing systems are complete and accurate and support the value delivery system. He/she will ensure the department utilizes the latest technology to achieve the fullest design potential and process improvements.
In this role, the Product Engineer is responsible for several items as they relate to the strategic mission of the organization.
- Sustain existing products including keep informed of issues in the field and with manufacturing/suppliers to recognize problems early and correct them, identify opportunities for product improvement and/or expansion, understand industry trends and how they affect product designs, and identify ways to enhance a products competitive position.
- Influence the cost of product development, sustainment, and enhancement efforts.
- Perform and review mechanical analyses on pump components, systems, and special designs.
- Perform and review hydraulic analyses as needed.
- Recommend material selections based on the customer's operating environment and difficult applications.
- Create and maintain standard bills of material for the product family.
- Assure the latest technology is properly used throughout the department and identify training needs for individuals.
- Manage drawing and documentation accuracy and thoroughness.
- Maintain standards and conform to established policies and practices. Draft new or updated standards and procedures, when relevant.
- Collaborate with all functional groups internal to the organization as well as with customers and sales representatives. Negotiate design changes in order to gain consensus on design from all groups.
- Support test for the evaluation of prototypes and validation of products.
- Support field service in troubleshooting problems as needed.
- Assure department compliance with the quality system.
- Plan projects and assignments aligned with the overall schedule and objectives of the department. Consult management regarding constraints and capacity issues.
- Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
- Respond with a sense of urgency and take initiatives as needed to accomplish project objectives.
- Other related responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
· B.S.M.E. or equivalent with some industrial market or B2B experience is ideal.
· Rotating equipment operating, selecting and/or design experience, such as centrifugal pumps is a plus.
· Proficient computer skills including MS Word, Excel, Access, CAD software, or similar technical software.
· Demonstrated ability to evaluate diverse situations and obtain results. The ability to make good business decisions while handling multiple tasks is necessary.
· Must have good verbal, written, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently in a professional capacity as well as supervise subordinate work.
