Freqently Asked Questions
Interning as a Florida Project Engineer in Sanford involves hands-on exposure to construction management tasks like budget control, submittal coordination, and safety oversight specific to Florida’s commercial projects. Unlike some internships, this role emphasizes learning the intricacies of project scheduling and client communications within a dynamic regional construction market.
Success hinges on strong organizational skills, proficiency in spreadsheets and document control, plus an ability to quickly grasp construction details such as miscellaneous metals and casework. Effective communication and adaptability to fast-paced project environments at Balfour Beatty also distinguish top interns.
Project Engineer Interns in Sanford typically earn between $18 and $24 per hour, reflecting competitive pay for engineering internships in Florida. Balfour Beatty’s comprehensive benefits and the opportunity to gain valuable construction experience add significant value beyond base compensation.
Sanford offers a smaller, community-focused environment with less traffic congestion, making commutes easier but potentially limiting large-scale project diversity. For interns, this means closer team interaction and more direct mentorship, contrasting with the busier, more competitive scenes found in Tampa or Orlando.
Balfour Beatty’s internship integrates comprehensive training on cost management, safety, and quality control with real project engagement, emphasizing zero harm® safety culture. This practical, hands-on approach differentiates it from other internships that may focus heavily on theoretical learning.
Balfour Beatty fosters a culture of innovation, lean process adoption, and safety-first mindset. Interns can anticipate a supportive environment encouraging curiosity, continuous learning, and teamwork, aligned with the company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The internship offers practical experience managing project schedules, budgets, and quality controls, plus exposure to client and subcontractor interactions. This immersive learning equips students with foundational skills and industry insights critical for transitioning into full-time engineering or construction management positions.
Prior hands-on experience in commercial construction, even if limited, boosts competitiveness. Demonstrating strong computer skills, quick learning capacity, and participation in related training or seminars further positions applicants favorably for Balfour Beatty’s internship.
Interns gain direct experience reviewing submittals, RFIs, change orders, and attending meetings with architects and owners. This exposure helps them understand the flow of information necessary to keep projects on track and resolve issues collaboratively.
While not mandatory, certifications in OSHA safety standards or construction management software can enhance readiness. Engaging in relevant coursework and internships in Florida’s construction sector also helps candidates demonstrate practical knowledge aligned with Balfour Beatty’s expectations.
