Position Summary:
The Electric Lineman / Crew Leader performs skilled electrical line work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the Fort Valley Utility Commission’s electric distribution system. This position is also responsible for leading a crew in performing field operations, ensuring work is conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulations and Commission standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lineman Duties:
- Construct, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electrical distribution lines, transformers, and related equipment.
- Install and replace poles, crossarms, conductors, insulators, and other system components.
- String, sag, splice, and terminate conductors and cables.
- Set and remove meters, transformers, switches, and regulators.
- Respond to service interruptions and emergency calls; restore power safely and promptly.
- Operate and maintain line trucks, bucket trucks, diggers, and other related equipment.
- Perform hot line work using proper protective equipment and procedures.
- Ensure all work complies with National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and Commission safety policies.
Crew Leader Duties:
- Supervise and direct a crew of linemen, apprentices, and equipment operators in daily assignments.
- Plan, assign, and monitor work to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
- Conduct job briefings, safety meetings, and ensure compliance with safety procedures and regulations.
- Coordinate materials, equipment, and resources for assigned jobs.
- Train and mentor crew members, ensuring proper work techniques and safety practices.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, time, and materials used.
- Serve as a primary contact for the Electric Superintendent regarding field operations, outages, and project status.
- Communicate effectively with customers, contractors, and other departments as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in electric line construction and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to high-voltage transmission and distribution systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical maps, blueprints, and diagrams.
- Skilled in operating bucket trucks, line equipment, and climbing poles.
- Ability to lead and train others effectively while maintaining a positive, safety-focused team environment.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and under adverse weather conditions or during emergency outages.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Completion of an approved Electrical Lineman Apprenticeship Program or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Journeyman Lineman.
- Valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety standards.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
- Work involves climbing poles and structures, operating heavy equipment, and performing duties at heights.
- Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
Working Conditions:
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Subject to 24-hour emergency call-out during outages or storm events.
- Rotating on-call duty required.
