Freqently Asked Questions
Teaching in a high-security correctional setting demands not only mastery in science subjects but also expertise in managing volatile behaviors, individualized instruction, and competency-based learning. Understanding trauma-informed approaches and crisis de-escalation techniques is crucial for fostering a safe, effective learning environment.
Educators must adapt instructional materials using varied resources and methods to address unique cognitive and emotional needs. This includes ongoing assessment interpretation and flexible teaching strategies that promote engagement and academic growth despite potential aggression or specialized needs among youth.
Opportunities for advancement often include taking on leadership roles within educational programs, specializing in behavioral science education, or contributing to curriculum development. Continuous professional development, including certifications in use of force and trauma-informed education, enhances career trajectory in this niche.
Yes, apart from a valid Texas secondary teaching certificate, candidates must obtain and maintain certification in TJJDs use of force techniques. This ensures readiness to physically restrain juveniles safely and comply with agency safety protocols, reflecting the unique demands of correctional education.
This position involves instructing youth adjudicated for felony offenses within a secure facility, requiring specialized skills in managing aggressive behaviors and individualized learning plans, unlike typical school settings. The company emphasizes safety compliance and offers unique benefits like hazardous duty pay and career ladder advancements.
Teachers enjoy comprehensive state benefits, including health, retirement plans, paid leave, and educational assistance programs. Optional add-ons such as dental and vision insurance enhance coverage. The agency also provides career ladder advancements and hazardous duty pay, recognizing the challenging nature of correctional education.
The salary range typically spans from approximately $60,700 to $94,200 annually, reflecting the specialized responsibilities and correctional environment. This compensation aligns competitively with similar roles in Texas public education sectors, factoring in the unique demands of working with adjudicated youth.
While Austin's educational sector is robust, positions in juvenile justice facilities are niche and attract candidates with specialized skills. Demand remains steady due to ongoing needs for qualified teachers adept at managing high-security environments, though competition may be less intense compared to mainstream school districts.
Given the facility's location in Austin and the possibility of extended work hours or on-call duties, teachers should anticipate commuting considerations in a busy metropolitan area. The high-security setting also demands readiness for unpredictable situations, requiring resilience and flexibility beyond typical school environments.
Applicants should emphasize their bachelor’s degree, valid Texas secondary certification, and any experience with behavioral management or correctional education. Demonstrating compliance with mandatory pre-employment screenings and readiness for physical and behavioral assessments strengthens candidacy.
