Must-Have Qualifications

  • Licensure & Certifications:

    Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license

    BLS, NRP, and RNC-NIC (RNC-NIC required within 6 months of hire)

  • Experience:

    Minimum 2 years of NICU RN experience in a Level III or higher NICU

    Minimum 1 year of formal RN leadership experience (Charge Nurse, Clinical Coordinator, Supervisor, Assistant Nurse Manager, or Nurse Manager – Relief Charge experience not accepted)

  • Education:BSN or MSN required
  • Preferred:Experience managing within a union environment

Position Overview

The Assistant Nurse Manager, NICU supports daily operations and ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality neonatal care. This role combines leadership, clinical supervision, and operational management in a 24/7 Level III+ NICU environment. The Assistant Nurse Manager collaborates with physicians and the care team, resolves patient or family concerns, and ensures a safe environment for both patients and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Supervise daily staff operations and ensure compliance with policies and standards

  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and mentorship to nursing staff

  • Develop staffing plans and address barriers to team performance

Operational & Administrative Oversight

  • Manage staffing, productivity, resource allocation, and budget targets

  • Facilitate team meetings and support hospital administrative processes

  • Monitor and interpret operational data to meet departmental goals

Care Delivery Management

  • Oversee patient care activities and ensure appropriate staff assignment

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary teams and uphold accountability for care standards

  • Support emergency preparedness planning and staff training

Quality, Safety & Process Improvement

  • Maintain regulatory compliance (Nursing Practice Act, The Joint Commission)

  • Participate in patient safety investigations and resolution of escalated issues

  • Lead and support process improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes, quality, and efficiency
