Freqently Asked Questions
Jackson's industrial growth, especially in energy resources, fuels a steady demand for civil engineers skilled in structural and environmental projects. Compared to other engineering disciplines, civil engineering roles often offer more onsite involvement and hybrid schedules due to the nature of construction and infrastructure work in the region.
Holding a Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly valued in Jackson, MI, particularly for civil engineers working on energy and infrastructure projects. Familiarity with regional building codes like IBC and ASCE 7 also enhances job prospects, reflecting the local emphasis on safety and structural standards.
Civil Engineers specialize in the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure, focusing heavily on structural integrity and environmental factors. Mastery in civil/structural codes and software like SAP2000 or RISA3D sets them apart, alongside skills in contract administration and on-site problem solving.
Contract Civil Engineers often transition into project lead or principal engineer roles by accumulating varied project experiences, especially in hybrid onsite settings. Demonstrating proficiency in structural engineering and leadership on multidisciplinary teams paves the way for senior positions within firms like Planet Group.
Daily responsibilities include reviewing engineering drawings, coordinating with project managers, and applying structural codes to ensure safety and compliance. Site visits for inspection, troubleshooting design challenges, and preparing contract documents are frequent tasks, especially in industrial environments like coal and gas plants.
At Planet Group, Civil Engineers work closely within project teams, balancing lead and support roles across diverse energy projects. The company values adaptability to shifting priorities due to emergent work, encouraging engineers to leverage strong communication and problem-solving skills in dynamic industrial settings.
This 14-month hybrid contract blends onsite presence with remote flexibility, targeting energy resource projects that demand expertise in both structural and environmental engineering. Planet Group’s focus on multidisciplinary teamwork and in-state travel sets it apart from static office-based civil engineering roles.
Contract Civil Engineers in Jackson typically earn between $39 and $42 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. This rate reflects the specialized demands of industrial energy projects and the hybrid work schedule, aligning well with regional compensation standards for engineering contractors.
Many assume civil engineering is purely office-based, but roles involving coal and gas facilities require physical stamina to navigate noisy, hot, and dusty sites. Engineers often climb ladders, enter tight spaces, and endure rough terrain, making physical fitness and safety awareness essential.
Proficiency in codes such as AISC, ACI, and AWS D1.1 ensures compliance with safety and construction standards, while skills in software like Staad and Mathcad streamline design accuracy. These competencies enable engineers to independently manage complex tasks and contribute meaningfully to project success.
