The Caedmon School seeks candidates for the Elementary Spanish teacher position. We seek candidates who understand the role of teacher as a facilitator of student inquiry and the importance of a carefully prepared learning environment.Classroom teaching.The ideal candidate possesses an understanding of the cognitive, social, and emotional development of elementary aged children. He or she must be versed or have interest in educational approaches that position the student as the driver of their own learning and in curricula based on student inquiry.Professional growth.The ideal candidate is a perpetual learner and models this explicitly for the students. He or she is open to trying new approaches to curriculum, pedagogy, and strategies for meeting student needs; takes a receptive stance to feedback from colleagues; engages in thoughtful risk-taking in his or her teaching; and actively digs into workshops and discussions at faculty meetings and professional development events. He or she habitually reflects on his or her own teaching and the learning of each child.Community.The ideal candidate brings a keen enthusiasm for the work; participates wholeheartedly in the life of the faculty; and conducts himself or herself professionally and warmly. He or she communicates often and clearly with colleagues about curriculum and student progress; freely shares resources and teaching strategies; and infuses planning sessions with fresh, innovative ideas. He or she will have opportunities to work with families and dialogue with them about the growth of their child and about the curriculum as it unfolds. Additionally, this individual will have opportunities to participate in family conferences and write progress reports.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement engaging Spanish lessons for students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade, fostering language acquisition through immersive, interactive, and developmentally appropriate methods.
- Willingness to work closely with classroom teachers and Specialist teachers to integrate Spanish language learning across subject areas
- Observe and assess student progress in language acquisition, providing regular feedback to students and families through narrative reports and conferences twice per year.
- Conduct family conferences to discuss student progress, and foster strong school-family partnerships.
- Participate in all faculty meetings, weekly grade-level specialists meetings, and professional development opportunities to support continuous growth in both language instruction and broader pedagogical practices.
- Create a nurturing and inclusive classroom environment that encourages risk-taking, curiosity, and a love of language learning.
Qualifications:
- A deep appreciation for and enjoyment of working with young children, with an ability to foster joyful, engaging, and student-centered language experiences.
- High proficiency in Spanish, including fluency in speaking, reading, and writing, alongside strong knowledge of language acquisition pedagogy.
- Demonstrated flexibility, creativity, and innovation in lesson planning and adapting instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with colleagues and families in a professional and supportive manner.
- A Master’s degree in Education, Spanish, or a related field is highly preferred.
- 3-5 years of teaching experience, preferably in elementary language instruction.
- Training in Responsive Classroom or a demonstrated commitment to social-emotional learning and student-centered teaching practices. Familiarity with, or a willingness to learn about, Montessori philosophy and practices is highly valued.
