SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Responsible for performing venipuncture, patient registrations into hospital registration system, accessioning laboratory physicians orders into the laboratory information system, assuring proper handling of patient specimens, assuring accuracy of patient identification demographic and verifying insurance information. Maintain knowledge of regulations applicable to the lab and hospital to maintain constant compliance.

ESSENTIAL DUITES - The percentage of time spent performing essential functions is 95%. Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
- Perform venipunctures on adult and pediatric patients. Assure that physician test orders are legible and entered accurately into the Laboratory information system. Similarly, assure that patient demographic information is complete and that patient insurance information is accurately entered into the hospital registration system.
- Assure that specimens are received within allowable time frames, are in appropriate containers and with acceptable labels. Resolve discrepancies in specimen labeling, written orders and specimen types.
- Obtain ABNs and insurance authorization forms. Retrieve specimens drawn by clinic nurses and process for transport to the Clinical Laboratory. Answer all incoming inquiries for patient laboratory results, specimen requirements and test status. Consult on-line information, procedure manuals, physicians, nurses or supervisors as appropriate when requests are unusual to assure that accurate information is provided.
- Process specimens for testing, referral, or storage according to established criteria. Take appropriate action to assure specimen integrity for time sensitive tests.
- Accurately and completely segregate and process specimens for research studies and clinical trials. Operate basic types of laboratory and office equipment, to include centrifuges, pneumatic tube transport systems, fax machines, photocopiers and desktop computers.
- Greet and receive patients presenting for laboratory services.
- Performs mandatory quality control. Maintains quality control records
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
- High School Diploma or equivalency
- Six (6) months experience in Phlebotomy required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):
- Medical Assistant experience or clerical experience in a medical setting preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
