Harvard University
Position Title/Short Description
Full Text of JOE Listing:
Oversee and develop the analytical work for a portfolio of research projects, contribute to the broader strategic vision of projects, and assure the quality of analytic products.
The Associate Director of Research will primarily work on the States Leading States (SLS) Initiative, which partners with state education agencies to evaluate the impact of their policy initiatives and spread effective policies to other states. This position will report to CEPR’s States Leading States Senior Director and will work closely with the Director of Research who oversees the analytic team.
The Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University (CEPR) seeks to transform education through quality research and evidence. CEPR and its partners believe all students will learn and thrive when education leaders make decisions using facts and findings, rather than untested assumptions. By generating relevant and accessible research, developing technical and organizational capacity to use evidence, and creating a community of schools and systems dedicated to using evidence for progress, CEPR helps researchers and practitioners uncover and share the best of what works—and what doesn’t—in education.
Applications received by September 12th will receive priority consideration. Applications considered on a rolling basis after that date.

Chelsea's proximity to Boston's academic and policy hubs generates moderate to high demand for senior research roles. Candidates with strong analytical leadership and experience in education policy research tend to stand out due to the area's focus on public sector and institutional research efforts.
Unlike entry-level research associates, this role emphasizes overseeing multiple projects, contributing to strategic visions, and ensuring analytic quality. Leadership in coordinating teams and liaising with stakeholders is key, especially within initiatives like education policy evaluation.
The American Economic Association integrates economic research with educational policy impact, requiring a blend of economics expertise and education sector awareness. This contrasts with more clinical or purely scientific research roles, demanding strategic insight into policy translation.
Candidates with advanced degrees in economics, education policy, or related fields, combined with leadership experience in data analytics and project management, align well. Familiarity with state-level policy evaluation and evidence-based educational reforms is a significant advantage.
Salaries for Associate Directors of Research in Chelsea typically range between $95,000 and $130,000 annually, reflecting the high cost of living near Boston and the specialized skill set required. Compensation often includes benefits aligned with academic and nonprofit sectors.
Certifications in data analytics, project management (like PMP), or advanced statistical software (e.g., Stata, R) boost appeal. Given Chelsea’s emphasis on education policy, expertise in policy analysis and stakeholder engagement is especially valued.
Progression often leads to senior director or executive research roles, especially by demonstrating strategic impact in state-level education initiatives. Expanding expertise in cross-sector collaborations and securing grant leadership can also unlock higher leadership opportunities.
The role offers substantial influence over analytic approaches and dissemination strategies, balancing collaboration with senior directors and independent judgment. Decision-making autonomy is key, particularly when tailoring research to support effective education policies.
Chelsea offers convenient public transit links to Boston, but rush hour congestion can extend commute times. Candidates should factor in flexible work arrangements or proximity to the city center to optimize daily travel for roles demanding frequent collaboration.
The position acts as a pivotal liaison, embedding AEA’s policy-focused research within Harvard’s broader academic environment. This fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and access to extensive resources, elevating the scope and impact of education policy studies.
