Freqently Asked Questions
A Clinical / Professor of Oral Pathology typically requires a DMD or DDS, completion of a CODA-accredited residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology, and board certification from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. This specialization is more research and diagnostic microscopy-focused compared to general dental faculty positions.
In Gainesville, Oral Pathology professors engage not only in teaching predoctoral and postgraduate students but also actively participate in biopsy services and clinical practice. This blend of diagnostics, research, and teaching creates a dynamic workload distinct from purely didactic or clinical dental roles.
Advancement can include moving from assistant to associate professor roles, securing tenure-track positions, expanding research portfolios, and taking leadership roles in oral pathology biopsy services. Opportunities for cross-departmental appointments, such as in pathology at affiliated hospitals, also enhance career growth.
Faculty at The International Epr (Esr) Society may encounter the challenge of balancing rigorous research expectations with clinical duties and teaching. Navigating institutional collaborations within UF's health science colleges also requires adaptability to multidisciplinary academic environments.
The society provides access to a robust oral pathology biopsy service and opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research alongside predoctoral and postgraduate mentoring. Faculty benefit from interdisciplinary connections across UF Health Science Center’s six colleges, fostering comprehensive professional development.
Salaries for this role in Gainesville typically range from $90,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience and academic rank. The University of Florida aligns compensation with credentials and offers competitive packages reflective of Florida’s cost of living and academic standards.
Gainesville, with its strong academic institutions like UF, has a moderate demand for oral pathology specialists. While smaller than metro areas like Miami, the niche expertise required limits competition, balancing fewer job openings with higher specialization demand.
Beyond the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology certification, Gainesville employers prioritize candidates with CODA-accredited residency completion and teaching experience. Affiliation with UF and hospital credentialing enhances a candidate’s standing in this regional job market.
This position often involves affiliate appointments in UF’s College of Medicine’s pathology department, facilitating collaborative research and hospital credentialing. Such cross-disciplinary engagement enriches the academic environment and broadens clinical impact within the university.
Applicants should emphasize board certification, residency completion, and relevant teaching experience in both predoctoral and postgraduate settings. Highlighting a track record in diagnostic microscopic pathology and collaborative research aligns well with the society’s focus and UF’s academic culture.
